After every overseas assignment, Foreign Service officers get Home Leave – vacation days to reconnect with America. Decades ago without modern technology, this was essential. Being posted to pre-internet 1980’s Zaire could be pretty isolating. Nowadays we’re much more connected. But still, home leave is a welcome break after returning from overseas, and before starting your next assignment and ship out all over again.
If you’re posted to DC you don’t get Home Leave (obviously), so I didn’t qualify for any. But L did after he returned from his two-year stint in Nicaragua. In August we took a week vacation to Colorado to visit my family, and to take a little time for ourselves.
Colorado is amazing, and every time I’m there I realize how much I miss the mountains and the ability to see for miles and miles.
Also, I got to reconnect with Oscar the lazy pug.
