First Impressions

We made it to Nicaragua! We don’t have internet set up at our house yet, but I’m using the wireless internet at a great coffee shop nearby.  I wanted to capture our first impressions, so I’m posting something I wrote on Day #2 in Nicaragua.

First Impressions:

Having both been to Nicaragua before, the airport itself or the drive from the airport wasn’t much of a surprise for us. It was hassle-free and strangely, the city really doesn’t seem to have changed much in terms of development from when we were here several years before…other than a marked increase in traffic.

But we did manage to have some surprises on our first day.

Surprise #1: We’re in a house, not an apartment! I guess they changed our housing assignment in the last few weeks and didn’t mention anything to us. We were excited about the apartment we were originally assigned to be in, but this house is great! It has a large outdoor covered patio that will be perfect for dinners outside or parties.  Since we were told we would be in an apartment, we didn’t pack hardly any gardening tools or a lawnmower in our crate, so I guess we’ll have to figure out where to get some of that stuff here.

Surprise #2: We met Superman on our first evening in Nicaragua! Well, not Superman, but Dean Cain, the actor who played him in the TV series Lois and Clark. He and his entourage, that included a few other Hollywood personalities, were in Nicaragua doing charity work. They stopped by the Italian restaurant where we were eating with a bunch of Embassy people.

Surprise #3: Security is tight. I won’t go into it all, but I’m amazed over the massive number of keys we were issued for our house (over 20!). There are locks everywhere. I still haven’t explored all of the deadbolts, padlocks, and doorknob locks around the house!

Overall our first impressions are overwhelmingly positive. We like our new house. Everyone has been very welcoming, especially our great sponsors. This place has all the signs of a great first post.

Yay! So glad you love your place – a garden! I hope to be reading all about how you will no longer eat anything that was grown more than 10 yards from your kitchen – chicken, anyone?

We miss you guys! DC is not the same.

It will take a while to get there unless we want to eat papaya 3 meals a day. Papaya pancakes anyone?
